Description
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution seeks a weekend GA reporter to work on quick-turn daily and enterprise coverage. This role offers the flexibility of a permanent 4-day work week: Saturday and Sunday, with two other days to be determined.
The ideal candidate is a proactive, solutions-oriented, entrepreneurial thinker who will help plan coverage of key weekend events and make sure AJC.com starts each Monday with strong digital offerings.
The person in this role reports directly on Saturdays and Sunday to the Weekend Editor and is aligned with the Crime and Public Safety/Breaking News teams. He or she will identify strong enterprise opportunities on weekends but should be ready to pivot and assist with breaking news coverage as needed.
The ideal candidate is a prolific multitasker with strong news judgment and excellent writing skills who can work independently. He or she will collaborate closely with teams throughout the newsroom including photo and video. In breaking news situations where immediate action is necessary and there isn’t time to secure photo/video coverage, he or she should be able to take photos and video as needed.
This reporter must reliably turn quick, clean, camera-ready copy on tight deadline and should be proficient in filing remotely as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field is preferred.
- With a BA, at least 2 years of media/journalism experience. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master’s degree and up to 1 year of experience or 6 years of experience in a related field without a degree.
- Strong news judgment, strong writing skills and ability to collaborate with different teams throughout the newsroom.
- Passion and belief in local, regional and statewide journalism and its role as a societal change agent
- Understanding of journalism standards and media ethics
- Must work with a sense of urgency and the ability to work off hours as dictated by news events
- Reliable transportation and home Internet access.
Compensation:
Hourly base pay rate is $28.08 - $42.12/hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program.
Benefits:
Employees are eligible to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, parental leave, and COVID-19 vaccination leave.
